On 22 May 2023, the students of transport engineering conducted an excursion to the Federal Horticultural Show (BUGA) in Mannheim as part of the Master's seminar "Operational Phase", led by Dr.-Ing. Olivia Spiker. The aim of this excursion was to give the students an insight into the planning and organisation of transport at the large-scale BUGA event in order to be able to transfer the experiences from Mannheim to the planned BUGA in Wuppertal. The excursion was professionally accompanied by the responsible traffic planner of the BUGA Mannheim, Angelo Canu.

The first item on the programme was an introduction by the traffic planner, who explained the various aspects of traffic planning in connection with the BUGA. Themes were how the flow of visitors is guided to the two core areas (Spinelli Park and Luisen Park), how the connection to public transport is made and which measures have been taken to manage the traffic around the BUGA.

Afterwards, the BUGA site and the implemented traffic planning measures for pedestrian, bicycle, public and motorised individual traffic were shown.

The excursion to the BUGA Mannheim was an extremely educational and exciting experience for the students of transport engineering.

Special thanks to Mr Angelo Canu who had an answer to all questions.
