Abstract:
As buildings grow smarter, so does the capacity to deliver novel, sustainable, and exciting visual experiences. Latent within these systems are critical design decisions that must be made, reviewed, and tested. The design process for such complex constructions does not lend itself to easy access by many, placing agency on those writing the codes and manipulating the models. Those are the ones charged with the myriad little decisions; with clear and resolute agency. We, as designers, must all therefore carefully balance our use of quantitative analysis with qualitative visuals that can effectively communicate design. In this presentation, we will share a series of case studies that illustrate opportunities to execute methods for lighting and daylighting design tuned to the locale and adapted to the architecture. These projects, through design processes that blended qualitative and quantitative methods, produced cohesive, efficient, and comprehensive designs. Moreover, the studies were specifically created to help stakeholders intuitively understand the design and make informed decisions about their buildings. We will, throughout the presentation, share how we employ software, including Rhinoceros 3D, Grasshopper, Revit, Radiance-based tools including Honeybee and Climate Studio, Autodesk 3ds Max, and Iray+.
